Start Getting in Better Shape – Right Now

We’re in the thick of the Holiday Season and many of you are beginning to think about your annual New Years Resolution to start getting in better shape. You know, after the Holidays are over and things settle down. Or, after you get back from where ever you spend the winter months and you get settled back in your summer home. Or after your kids or grandkids go back to school, their sports season is over, work slows down (or you retire) …. and you have more time.

You’re waiting for the “perfect time” to get started.

Problem is, there is no such thing.

Something will always come up that requires your time and energy; illness in the family, your kids may ask you to help watch the grandkids while they’re working full time, you need to help care for an elderly parent, your boss wants you to take on an extra project, etc.

It’s called “life.”

Since there will never be a “perfect” time to start getting in better shape, start now with what you can manage.

Will it be perfect? Probably not. But it will be better than nothing, which is what the fall back most likely is.

So, get ready to take some action and start getting in better shape!

1. Start Small

Just start. Right now. Pick any kind of physical activity that is quick and easy to do, doesn’t require learning new skills or a gym membership, that you can do anywhere.

Examples: walking, marching in place, bodyweight strength exercises like squats, push-ups, or lunges, etc.

Even if it’s just 10 minutes, it’s better than nothing.

Do it now. I’ll wait….

2. Get Social

Make a regular walking date with a friend or neighbor, or find a workout buddy. You’re less likely to bail out on your exercise program on days you just don’t feel like doing it if someone else is depending on you.

3. Try a New Sport or Activity

Maybe you’ve got some time, but just don’t know what you’d like to do or where to start? Check out your local community center for classes such as Tai Chi, Water Aerobics, Yoga, or exercise classes. Maybe even golf or tennis lessons. Many local or state parks may have guided hikes, geocaching, or archery lessons. You’ll meet other like-minded people and might find a new activity that you truly enjoy 🙂

Sign up for a class now. Then you’ll have a commitment to participate in regular activity for as long as the class runs, which will at least get you started.

4. Make Time, Even if it’s Not Perfect

The “perfect time” will never come. So make your health and fitness a priority and make time in your schedule to fit something in.

Don’t have time for a “full workout?” Then work with what you’ve got. (See #1).

Get out of the “all or nothing” mindset. Something will always be better than nothing.

If you miss a day (or three), no biggie. Just start again. (See #1. Really).

5. Get Support From a Pro

Rather than trying to figure out on your own what types of exercise or activity would be most beneficial for your particular goals and needs, hire a professional Personal Trainer. They can do an assessment to see where you’re starting from and help you figure out the best exercise program for your current ability and lifestyle. You will get the most bang for your buck with this option and will be more likely to succeed in the long run.

If you’re in the Minneapolis area, contact me now and we’ll schedule your initial assessment. I currently see people face-to-face either in-home or at a private studio in Eden Prairie. You also have the option of online coaching if you need more support being consistent with fitness or healthy eating habits. We can figure out what the best option is for your specific situation and budget.
