I often get asked, “What is the best core exercise for strengthening my abdominals and low back?”
First, please understand that “core” is much, much more than just the abdominal muscles. While abs are certainly part of the core, the core also includes the shoulder girdle, lumbo pelvic hip complex, and everything in between.
Here is a video of a great core exercise showing a basic version of the Pallof Press, named after John Pallof, the physical therapist who is credited with creating it. What I LOVE about this exercise is that you can do so much with it to fit the goals and abilities of any client. It is basically an anti-rotation exercise that can be manipulated by foot placement, how long you hold the press, adding an isometric squat, etc. I’ve used some variation of this with my athletes, elderly, and post rehab clients with great success. Enjoy!
