Many folks avoid doing deadlifts in the gym because they think they have a high risk of getting hurt. Any exercise has a high risk of injury if you don’t do it correctly!
And consider this: any time you squat down to pick something up off of the floor, you’ve just done a deadlift. You may have just lifted a loaded laundry basket, a sack of groceries, or a box filled with… whatever. Deadlifts aren’t just done with barbells, they are part of everyday life.
